Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery

Memorial Day 2021

This Memorial Day Weekend Patty and I took a walk though Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Jefferson Barracks became the army’s first permanent base west of the Mississippi River in 1826 and was formally established as a national cemetery by a joint resolution of Congress.

Much history has passed through Jefferson Barracks. Over 200 Civil War Generals have passed through here including Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant who met his wife Julia who was born into prosperous a slave holding family in what is now Saint Louis.
